Longing for Home

I’m searching for the melody that is life-producing
Listening for the rhythm that regenerates hearts
This soulful song of the universe calls me home
To the realm of timelessness, where souls unite in their love for the Lord
So many feel stranded, not knowing that this rhythm pulsates through their flesh
So many feel abandoned, when it is this melody that stirs in the trees
But it’s something else altogether to know of this Beauty
And slowly, but surely become distant
Slowing backing away from the Eternal Flame
That cleanses one of all impurities
Leaving you radiantly aglow from head to toe
The accumulation of events intervenes
And before you know it
You’re cold and all alone with no idea of what happened
How it happened
Or why it happened

But this realization is your salvation
Set free by your initial encounter
Saved by the Flame, since you know
What it means to be cold
Journey forth towards the Source
And throw off these material garments
No worries about the cold anymore
Walk towards the Flame and explore

5/8/2011

I feel the need to sum up this past week (5/1-5/8) using a poem:

FIRE

This fire can warm you
Or this fire can burn you
It’s your choice
But know this fire will continue to blaze
I was born to blaze

Hot-blooded
Lover of summer days
Energized by the sun’s rays
Fearful of frigidity
Depressed by the grayness
Celebratory in sunlight
Solar energy breathes in me
But at the same time
Anger steams in me
Used to fight it
Used to live in denial
Now I understand my reality
And this fire within
This love,
This rage,
This passion,
This determination,
Amount to a fire that blazes
At times too fiercely
For peacemakers
At times too bright
For neutrality
Understanding the need for peace
I’m a lover of war
Feeling like these trials are basic training
Loving the strength I’m gaining
I can’t sing ‘Kumbayah’
While these demons run free
In the end, do you to the fullest
Cuz I can only do me

This fire can warm you
Or this fire can burn you
It’s your choice
But know this fire will continue to blaze
I was born to blaze

5/1/2011

This week was National Convention week.  The time in which the delegates elected by American Baha’is across the country elect the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States.  For those of us working at the Baha’i National Center, this is our Super Bowl.

Sitting here today, I can honestly say that I feel TI-Red, both mentally and emotionally.  And I predict that I will be napping soon.

The  two major happenings that have really buttessed my spirit in these days is the success of the home visit initiative that I was a part of last weekend and the fact that I am in a marriage that is going well, not perfectly, but very well.  Perfection is a mirage, my friends, and I’m sure a lot of married couples realize this.  One thing that I emphasized to my friend Jeremy, is the fact that marriage is a WHOLE NEW BALLGAME, and how it should not be viewed as an extension of a courtship.  It’s different….period.

Going back to the home visits, I feel like I learned a new dynamic that I really never grasped before.  Simply stated, someone’s home is a place of safety which opens the gates to a deeply spiritual conversation.  With each of the home visits that were done, our only agenda was to study a prayer with the soul and let the conversation develop as it may.  I’m a strong believer that a slim agenda, pure intentions, and a humble attitude are the ingredients of a successful home visit.  It should always be kept in mind that it is an honor to be welcomed into someone’s home for an occasion such as home visit, so may we all act accordingly.

In other news, I found it to be ABSOLUTELY SHAMEFUL that our President felt it was necessary to release his Certificate of Live Birth on the internet.  I’m sure this move will satisfy his critics and quench their unbridled haterism (sarcasm alert).  It seems that our political discourse has gone from heavily contentious to depressingly childish.  I feel for all those who are strongly invested in any political party, because more and more going this route seems to lead those with pure intentions down the path of become a “plaything for the foolish”.

In closing, my prayers are with those individuals and families affected by the tornadoes that struck the South.  May our Heavenly Father bless and keep the innocent in heart.

Until next week,

Who’s yo Daddy?!

I overheard that there are a number of white folks, especially white males who are feeling “dispossessed”.  This sentiment is not something that I feel should be laughed at, scorned, or mocked.  It just needs to be placed in it’s proper context.

You see, American Capital is like the only father that America has known.  People who are willing to see him as a human being and not as just ‘daddy’, know that he is wild, impulsive, yet successful; merciless, soulless, yet powerful.  American Capital really took off when it saw a beautiful black babe that it wanted BADLY.  He knew that with the right skill and tactics, he could make her his slave and breed with her until total exhaustion.  So, he took her and raped her, and bred a whole new ‘race’ of people called African-Americans, all this while counting millions after millions of dollars.  Although his mark upon the race was obvious, he would never humble himself to claim them or acknowledge them, since ultimately that meant REPARATIONS.

Given his success, coupled with turmoil across the globe, American Capital became wildly popular and started attracting lots of attention which lead to more economic opportunities.  The process of industrialization began and this new thing called the ‘corporation’ formed.  American Capital LOVED the corporation, so much so, that even though it was bereft of a sense of humanity, ‘Daddy’ made sure that the law recognized it as a person.  At this point, American Capitol got richer and richer, and more and more powerful.  He felt that he could not lose.  His boredom with his own success along with his feelings of being invulnerable lead him to drinking and an increasingly bad gambling problem.  This gambling problem got so bad, that it lead to a ‘Great Depression’ and almost ALL of his children suffered because of his massive ego.

At this point, some of his more astute children decided to make an intervention.  They took their ‘Dad’ to rehab in an attempt to cure him of his gambling and drinking problem.  Realizing how far gone he was, they only sought to contain his bad habits.  They loved their Daddy too much to force him to do things that he would find offensive to his ego.  After several years, things got better, especially for his white children for whom he looked out for from time to time, but never loved.  Love was something American Capital was simply incapable of.  His black children were always there to remind him of his most heinous acts, so he hated them, fully knowing that hating him was hating himself, since raping their mother was how he really got his start.

Eventually, with zero help from America’s Daddy, his black kids started to win their civil rights.  Given centuries of oppression and pure hatred, his black kids had a long way to go, but they were determined to get their piece of the American dream that their Daddy was making possible for other Americans, the majority of whose roots did not go nearly as deep as theirs when it came to their time in America.  Unfortunately, these black kids could not foresee the next scheme on the horizon.  As American Capital became richer and more powerful, and as technology became more powerful, America’s Daddy started looking beyond his own backyard and started scanning the globe.

By some sadistic coincidence, it seemed that just as African-Americans were beginning to enjoy the social benefits that come with full participation in the American economy, America’s Daddy began flirting with other nations with a charm so blingy that very few could resist.  No longer having to rape so openly, he advised those dying to be Americans, how to rape and pillage in the American way.  With a wink, he said all he wanted was a ‘percentage’.  American Capital launched a two-way, highly successful campaign; one focused on expanding this new thing called globalization, and the other focused on trying his hardest to distance himself from his responsibility to his American children.  Some people who felt their ‘Daddy’ could do no wrong helped him with this plot, while others resisted.  The poorest among his children simply gave up the hope that their Daddy would ever care or ever help them out.

Sensing that these campaigns were successful, American Capital became very full of himself.  Not only did he start drinking again, and gambling even heavier than before; now he was snorting COCAINE!  He had cronies with him that could use language games to hide the fact that he was out of control.  Some of the terms used to hide this psychosis were “success”, “speculation”, and “investment”.  This partying lifestyle lasted for years, but eventually the numbers began to catch up with him.  Pretty soon, it was realized that Daddy’s gambling problem was made worse, by the new sophistication of gambling, and the many games that could be played now.  Wall Street became Las Vegas, except instead of spending their own money, they spent the money of all of Daddy’s kids.  Daddy was out of control.  Daddy gambled so much and snorted SO MUCH COCAINE, that he was essentially broke!!!

Sad, sad, sad!

Now forced to go to rehab.  He now had to borrow from his own children.  He promised to pay them back in a pitiful display, and given how much his kids loved Daddy, they gave him the money.  The thing that people STILL don’t understand about American Capital is the fact that it is soulless, it has no heart.  So any love shown to him, is shown in vain.  Americans treat him like their Daddy, like he can do no wrong and blame others for the wrong that he causes.  His black kids have been in the know for a while now, but some of his white children just don’t seem to understand the writing on the wall.  They don’t realize that Daddy doesn’t love them, so they blame the lowering of their standard of living on black kids, Arab kids, all kinds of other kids, or on people who are forced to deal with righting the wrongs of their ‘dear ole Dad’

Who’s Your Daddy?  Is it American Capital?  Is it God?  Hopefully, one day we will all say God because only then will the day come that none of God’s children feel ‘dispossessed’.

For the record, and without getting too political, my attitude towards capitalism is a detached one.  I recognize it’s unchallengeable ability to create prosperity, but I also recognize it’s uncanny ability to promote greed and gross economic inequality.  I think too many people treat capitalism as if its a God, when in reality it is simply an economic system in which people participate; therefore certain safeguards are necessary to keep a soulless, heartless system in check.

“If long-cherished ideals and time-honored institutions, if certain social assumptions and religious formulae have ceased to promote the welfare of the generality of mankind, if they no longer minister to the needs of a continually evolving humanity, let them be swept away and relegated to the limbo of obsolescent and forgotten doctrines. Why should these, in a world subject to the immutable law of change and decay, be exempt from the deterioration that must needs overtake every human institution? For legal standards, political and economic theories are solely designed to safeguard the interests of humanity as a whole, and not humanity to be crucified for the preservation of the integrity of any particular law or doctrine.”

Serenading Sanity

How often do we reflect on what’s real
How often do we question our eyes
And interrogate our ears
How often do we succumb to the fear
Of standing out
Because of how we see things
How often is frustration
Really our souls holding us accountable
And our inability to deal with the fact
That we lash out at others
Because of something we lack
Talking bad about Tyrone
But the question remains
Why were ya’ll kicking it so hard
And what about you, has made him
Someone you can easily discard
…After all these years?

How has the materiality of distance of time
Affected our relationship with the divine
Why does Home seem so far
When it’s closer to us than our bones
Why do we reach for the bottle
Instead of the Word to get our jones
What happened to the realism of mysticism?
And why is Rumi the only poet I can feel
Why do people try to have enlightened discussions
About race by trying to amend racial logic
Instead of trying to transcend
Seeking pats on the back for calling our President half-Black
When the one-drop rule is at the core of the “logic”
What are you saying?
What games are you playing
I guess in the end, it can’t be helped
But forgive me if I struggle to hold in my laugh
When I see through your glass
And find a purple heart easily bruised
But seeking to be a titan
Mouth-watering, but I detach
Like a vegetarian lion

The Power of Pain

There is no mirror like pain
Lend me your ear, let me explain

Pain cuts through to the real you
It cuts through your ego
And all those things that you say to yourself
To make you feel good
Pain brings you face to face with you
The real you, the raw you

True pain will teach you a lot
Pain taught me that beneath the surface
On the darker side of things
I have embers of rage
Always prepared to flame up
With any wind, any drop of fuel
Can send it raging
And I know I will be lost if it becomes a fire
Eternally lost

But pain also showed me an undying optimism
Deeply implanted in my heart
An optimism that tells me to love for God’s sake
An optimism that causes bouts of depression
When I see members of my Earth family acting out
Displaying their ignorance for all to see
Still, pain taught me that no matter what
My deep faith in humanity is always there
Even though this faith is challenged daily

Pain, deep pain, is a mirror
Because all of the bullshit fades
You’re just standing there
Spiritually naked
Caught off guard
Lost, hoping one day
To again become aware

The Nigga/er Lottery

Welcome to the Nigga/er Lottery where we will settle once and for all who OWNS the word nigga/er.

There is plenty at stake here.  After tonight, America will never be the same.   The first delegation to arrive was the “Let’s Be Good” coalition, consisting of mainstream Whites and their Black buddies.  They showed up 30 minutes before the ceremony and were seated calmly.

The next to arrive were the skinheads,  KKK members, and their various offshoots who are anxious to re-claim what they feel is rightfully theirs. There was plenty of hand-raising and shouts of ‘White Power!’

Last to arrive was the ‘Real’ Black delegation, a name chosen by this group to separate themselves from the Blacks who decided to join the Caucasian-led “Let’s Be Good” group.  This group came out to “Real As it Gets” by one Jay-Z and Young Jeezy.  There was plenty of swagger and fist-pumping as they came in, and if it wasn’t for all of the security a fight would’ve surely broken out, this time, not amongst themselves.

All three of the groups have already let it be known what they will do with the word nigga/er once they officially own it.

“Let’s Be Good” pledges to make the use of this word illegal.  If they win the lottery anyone caught saying “nigga/er” will be fined $50,000 and will be sentenced to 2,000 hours of community service.  This only after they are forced to listen to 20 hours worth of lectures as to why it isn’t OK for ANYONE to use the word.

The Nazi coalition pledges to reclaim the word “nigger” and re-teach the American population what a nigger truly is.  They pledge to this with a series of public service announcements to air throughout the year.  If they win the lottery, any White male who can be documented as saying “nigger” 3 times a day or at least 1,095 times within a year will receive a tax break.  Any Black person caught saying “nigga” or “nigger” in a positive or affirmative context will receive a mandatory prison sentence of 20 years.

The ‘Real’ Black coalition has pledged to officially replace “nigger” with “nigga.”  If they win the lottery they will make it a federal offense to say the word “nigger,” but if you’re Black the first time you use the wrong version you get off with a warning.  Anyone who cannot claim African ancestry is STRICTLY PROHIBITED to use the word “nigga,” no matter the context…no matter how hard it is for White folks to jam to rap music without saying the word.  African ancestry is defined as anyone who has at least one grandparent that is darker than a brown paper bag.  Any non-Black caught saying “nigger” will receive a mandatory 10 year sentence, and this sentence will be carried out after the completion of 40 hours of indentured servitude to a moderately successful Black family.  Any non-Black caught saying “nigga” will receive a mandatory 3 year sentence; to be completed after a 500-word essay is written to the federal government demanding that Blacks be given reparations.  Each essay will be thoroughly scanned for sarcasm.

So, ladies and gentleman….this is what is at stake.  As the balls bounce around I cannot wait to find out who will win………..

Religious Tribalism Manifested

I was floored by a poll conducted by CNN (I believe) that showed that 70% of Americans are opposed to an Islamic cultural center being built two blocks away from Ground Zero.  I’m using accurate language to make my point, since the media seems to scoff at such an idea.  Even though, I very much doubt that this poll asked the question in the way presented above, I still believe that this poll is worthy of reflection.

What does it mean when 70% of a population oppose the erection of a building designed for worship and other activities.  The first thing that immediately comes to mind is the fact that the worshipers that will use the facility must not be of the same Faith as the 70%.  The second thing that comes to mind is this 70% must view this different Faith as a threat, since people for the most part don’t mind what others do as long as its not affecting them in any way.

This is the logic that I am forced to use in order to make sense of all this hullabaloo over the proposed Islamic Center in New York, now named Park 51.  So, focusing on the second thing that comes to mind, why is Islam viewed as such a threat?  It would be illogical to try to separate Islam being viewed as a threat from the 9/11 attack, so my attempt to logically reconcile the rhetoric taking place and recent history brings me to the conclusion that what we’re really seeing acted out before our eyes is religious tribalism.

What is religious tribalism?  According to Wikipedia, tribalism is the possession of a strong cultural or ethnic identity that separates oneself as a member of one group from the members of another.  Using this definition of tribalism as my guide, I define religious tribalism as:

The possession of a strong religio-cultural identity that separates oneself from members of other religio-cultural groups.

When one thinks of a tribe, you can picture a situation in which a tribe lives pretty much isolated from other tribal groups, and therefore, lives in relative peace.  It would naturally be true that there would be conflicts within a tribe, since there is no enemy to unite them, but for the most part, you would see a peaceful co-existence.

Now, if someone from another tribe has the audacity to come to this tribe’s village and shoot a flaming arrow, you would expect that this tribe, freshly attacked, would be MORE THAN EAGER to avenge this attack and make the other side pay for what they did.  It would also be expected that the people of this tribe would make very little distinction between those individuals high on PCP that attacked them and the tribe that they just happen to belong to.

But when we fast-forward to today’s society, hopefully, we can all come to the realization that present-day society is deeply complex, too complex for a tribal mentality.  We all know that America, religio-culturally, is a Judeo-Christian, capitalist society.  Americans believe in the Bible and making money.  But what happens when you believe in the Qu’ran and making money?  Does that make you half-American?

I am convinced that religious tribalism is definitely at work when it comes to this Islamic cultural center debate.  I find it sad and intellectually depressing that I’m seeing this with my own eyes.  To watch so many of my Americans fall prey to a mentality that fails to distinguish between religious fanatics obsessed with destroying America and Muslims who worship God differently, but yet, still love America, hurts.

To say that it is insensitive for Muslim-Americans to build a cultural center two blocks away from Ground Zero is to effectively name them as co-conspirators in the 9/11 attack.  For what other reason would these people have to be ‘sensitive.’  Allowing these Americans to build the cultural center would be a great victory signalling to the world that American society has the foresight to embrace Muslims who believe in freedom and share our values.  Failure to do so, signals that in the same way that the 9/11 hijackers made no distinctions when they knocked down the towers, we will also make no distinctions between Muslims, despite the billions of souls who embrace Islam.

The soul of our nation can’t afford that.

From the “Seven Valleys”

It is clear to thine Eminence that all the variations which the wayfarer in the stages of his journey beholdeth in the realms of being, proceed from his own vision. We shall give an example of this, that its meaning may become fully clear: Consider the visible sun; although it shineth with one radiance upon all things, and at the behest of the King of Manifestation bestoweth light on all creation, yet in each place it becometh manifest and sheddeth its bounty according to the potentialities of that place. For instance, in a mirror it reflecteth its own disk and shape, and this is due to the sensitivity of the mirror; in a crystal it maketh fire to appear, and in other things it showeth only the effect of its shining, but not its full disk. And yet, through that effect, by the command of the Creator, it traineth each thing according to the quality of that thing, as thou observest.

In like manner, colors become visible in every object according to the nature of that object. For instance, in a yellow globe, the rays shine yellow; in a white the rays are white; and in a red, the red rays are manifest. Then these variations are from the object, not from the shining light. And if a place be shut away from the light, as by walls or a roof, it will be entirely bereft of the splendor of the light, nor will the sun shine thereon.

Thus it is that certain invalid souls have confined the lands of knowledge within the wall of self and passion, and clouded them with ignorance and blindness, and have been veiled from the light of the mystic sun and the mysteries of the Eternal Beloved; they have strayed afar from the jewelled wisdom of the lucid Faith of the Lord of Messengers, have been shut out of the sanctuary of the All-Beauteous One, and banished from the Ka’bih [1] of splendor. Such is the worth of the people of this age!

[1 The holy Sanctuary at Mecca. Here the word means"goal."]

And if a nightingale [1] soar upward from the clay of self and dwell in the rose bower of the heart, and in Arabian melodies and sweet Iranian songs recount the mysteries of God — a single word of which quickeneth to fresh, new life the bodies of the dead, and bestoweth the Holy Spirit upon the moldering bones of this existence — thou wilt behold a thousand claws of envy, a myriad beaks of rancor hunting after Him and with all their power intent upon His death.

[1 This refers to Bahá'u'lláh's own Manifestation.]….

In sum, the differences in objects have now been made plain. Thus when the wayfarer gazeth only upon the place of appearance — that is, when he seeth only the many-colored globes — he beholdeth yellow and red and white; hence it is that conflict hath prevailed among the creatures, and a darksome dust from limited souls hath hid the world. And some do gaze upon the effulgence of the light; and some have drunk of the wine of oneness and these see nothing but the sun itself.

Thus, for that they move on these three differing planes, the understanding and the words of the wayfarers have differed; and hence the sign of conflict doth continually appear on earth. For some there are who dwell upon the plane of oneness and speak of that world, and some inhabit the realms of limitation, and some the grades of self, while others are completely veiled. Thus do the ignorant people of the day, who have no portion of the radiance of Divine Beauty, make certain claims, and in every age and cycle inflict on the people of the sea of oneness what they themselves deserve. “Should God punish men for their perverse doings, He would not leave on earth a moving thing! But to an appointed term doth He respite them….” [1]

[1 Qur'án 16:63.]

O My Brother! A pure heart is as a mirror; cleanse it with the burnish of love and severance from all save God, that the true sun may shine within it and the eternal morning dawn. Then wilt thou clearly see the meaning of “Neither doth My earth nor My heaven contain Me, but the heart of My faithful servant containeth Me.” [1] And thou wilt take up thy life in thine hand, and with infinite longing cast it before the new Beloved One.

[1 Hadith, i.e. action or utterance traditionally attributed to the Prophet Muhammad or to one of the holy Imams.]

Whensoever the light of Manifestation of the King of Oneness settleth upon the throne of the heart and soul, His shining becometh visible in every limb and member. At that time the mystery of the famed tradition gleameth out of the darkness: “A servant is drawn unto Me in prayer until I answer him; and when I have answered him, I become the ear wherewith he heareth….” For thus the Master of the house hath appeared within His home, and all the pillars of the dwelling are ashine with His light. And the action and effect of the light are from the Light-Giver; so it is that all move through Him and arise by His will. And this is that spring whereof the near ones drink, as it is said: “A fount whereof the near unto God shall drink….” [1]

Notes on House of Justice member Mr. Paul Lample (Part 2)

Mr. Paul Lample then described what he saw as 3 elements that are essential to continue advancing the Five Year Plan.

1. Creating a coherent pattern of activity that fosters a vibrant, spiritualized community life.

2. The ability to think and learn at the level of the cluster.

3. Achieving universal participation in the work of the Cause.  Internalizing the statement “Everyone must have a part to play.”

Mr. Lample provided a rich context to the discussion of these three elements.  For example, he talked about how any activity proposed at the cluster level must always address the question: “How does this activity fit into the context of the Five Year Plan?”  He discussed having a booth at a local fair, something that has become taboo during the past few years since it doesn’t “seem” to fit the Plan.  He talked about how even a booth at a fair could be effective if those manning the booth are trained human resources who have a knack for recognizing receptivity and teaching the Faith in an inviting, dynamic way.  This was highly illuminating because emphasis was placed on the purpose behind the activity, instead of the activity itself.  If people are at the booth handing out flyers and pamphlets, then maybe we don’t pursue it.  But, if this booth is being used as a means to connect interested souls to devotional meetings, study circles, and children/Jr youth activities, then maybe this is an effective use of time.

He also discussed the role of local spiritual assemblies in the current Plan, especially those assemblies in communities that have experienced growth in the past 5 years.  Mr. Lample talked about how a lot of local spiritual assemblies have felt that they were on the sidelines and how there has been tension between LSAs and ATCs in some communities.  He emphasized that LSAs still have a central role to play, and discussed how along with the assemblies’ distinct administrative functions, what has been added is the responsibility to channel the community’s human resources into needed areas and becoming more of a loving parent to the community, instead of a carpenter directing the human resources of the community as if they are inanimate objects.  He made the point that as a loving parent, you know that as your child learns to walk, she will fall from time to time.  You don’t throw out the baby, and consider it defective.  In the same way, local spiritual assemblies should aspire to be loving parents to the community by giving community members and agencies room to make mistakes with the understanding that through these mistakes and missteps a greater, more mature understanding will come out of it.  Mr. Lample said so much during this talk, and I know I’m leaving a lot out, so please keep this in mind and realize I’m only describing what stood out for me.

Mr. Lample also made the point that as we engage in more of the core activities, and systematically multiply them to the point of having several activities each day of the week, more opportunities will arise for “outside of the box” activities rooted in one’s individual initiative.  The example he spoke on was having a deepening on “The Dawnbreakers”.  I don’t think anyone questions the value of such a deepening, but one may question how high on the priority list when placed next to other Baha’i activities.  But, when there is a lot going on in the community already, not only will an individual feel less pressure about hosting such an event, others will feel more free to join this deepening.

He then discussed the upcoming Five Year Plan and said that unlike the current Plan there is not likely to be a numerical goal.  He said that there will be a greater focus on the Baha’is moving deeper into the life of society, which means more emphasis on social discourse and social action.  He added that another anticipated feature of the next Five Year Plan will be capacity-building in ‘weaker’ countries, so they become stronger.  One of the most exciting statements made by Mr. Paul Lample was his comparison of the current time period with the 10-year Crusade.  He said that the same way that the 10-year Crusade brought many souls into the Faith after a long period of development with the Baha’i community, he can envision that the hard work that has been put into the past 15 years will yield limitless possibilities for the next 10 years.

Mr. Lample then briefly discussed some pitfalls that we need to avoid as Baha’is.  The first one he mentioned was creating dichotomies.  He emphazied the need for Baha’is to be flexible in our way of thinking and maintain an attitude of learning.  He discussed how one event caused by a misunderstanding can lead Baha’is down a path of ideological bickering that mirrors what is seen on cable news networks.  He encouraged us to stay away from what I call “conservative-everything-by-the-book rigidity” and “loosey goosey liberalism” where ‘everything is OK.’  Overall, I call such behavior an engagement in “Baha’i ideological partisanship” and he warned us to stay away from it.

He then spoke about ‘idle talk,’ and how it is being used in Iran to mischaracterize the Baha’i Faith there.  One of the most compelling developments happening in that country is that the people of Iran, themselves, are starting to see through the lies propagated by the government, especially the intellectuals of that country.  The statement “We Are Ashamed” is a great example of this.  He then talked about a lie that was spread about the Universal House of Justice and circulating the internet.  Some misguided soul spread a rumor about disunity within the House of Justice and how this disunity led to the resignations of Dr. Peter Khan and Mr. Hooper Dunbar.  Mr. Lample said that this could not be further from the truth, and the most laughable aspect of it was that fact that Mr. Lample would be the next one to resign because of this “disunity.”  He said, “No one was more surprised than me when I read this.”

After this moment of humor, he made the point that this was probably only the beginning of false rumors and outright lies being spread by people for the sole purpose of extinguishing the flame within the hearts of the lovers of Baha and to mischaracterize the Baha’i Faith in the eyes of the public.  He reminded those in attendance to be vigilant in the face of the severe mental tests that the Central Figures told us were sure to come.

To close out his talk, Mr. Paul Lample, in one of the more emotional moments of his talk, quoted the following passage in the Ridvan 2010 message:

Dear Friends:  How often did the Beloved Master express the hope that the
hearts of the believers would overflow with love for one another, that they
would abide no lines of separation but would regard all of humanity even as one
family.  “See ye no strangers,” is His exhortation; “rather see all men as
friends, for love and unity come hard when ye fix your gaze on otherness.”  All
of the developments examined in the preceding pages are, at the most profound
level, but an expression of universal love achieved through the power of the
Holy Spirit.  For is it not love for God that burns away all veils of
estrangement and division and binds hearts together in perfect unity?  Is it
not His love that spurs you on in the field of service and enables you to see
in every soul the capacity to know Him and to worship Him?  Are you not
galvanized by the knowledge that His Manifestation gladly endured a life of
suffering out of His love for humanity?  Look within your own ranks, at your
dear Baha’i brothers and sisters in Iran.  Do they not exemplify fortitude born
of the love of God and the desire to serve Him?  Does not their capacity to
transcend the cruelest and most bitter persecution bespeak the capacity of
millions upon millions of oppressed people of the world to arise and take a
decisive part in building the Kingdom of God on earth?  Undeterred by divisive
social constructs, press on and bring Baha’u'llah’s message to waiting souls in
every urban neighbourhood, in every rural hamlet, in every corner of the globe,
drawing them to His community, the community of the Greatest Name.  Never do
you leave our thoughts and prayers, and we will continue to implore the
Almighty to reinforce you with His wondrous grace.
